Officer Butts died on October 15, 1975 after suffering a sudden heart attack after subduing a suspect who was resisting arrest.  Officer Butts became ill after booking the suspect into the jail.  He was rushed to the hospital, where he later died.  Officer Butts, a 15-year veteran of the police department, was 40 years old.
