COMPASSION. HONOR. CONNECT.

The relationship between public safety and the community is an important one. We appreciate the opportunity to show our support back to the community. The job of law enforcement can be challenging, yet incredibly rewarding. That’s why we do what we do. There is true power in vulnerability and transparency, and here you’ll learn more about your police, your community. Maybe compassion is the bridge that connects us all? Together we can.

Thank you Sacramento for your support. We are grateful to serve and protect this community we call home. – Josh Kirtlan, SPOA president

The Impact of Gratitude

If you could thank a police officer, what would you say or do? Here are a few fun ways to show your appreciation.

1

Message us!

Write about your general appreciation and their hard work. Write about a specific incident where you observed service “above and beyond the call of duty.” We love sharing your messages of gratitude on our social media. Thank you!

2

Wave and say hi!

When you see an officer, give him or her a friendly greeting or gesture. Especially if it’s been a rough day, your smiles make it all more worth it.

3

Sponsor appreciation days

at your church, club or service organization. Some churches conduct special prayer services for police officers and firemen.

4

Volunteer.

Citizen volunteers help supplement and support officers and civilian personnel in many ways. Check out SPD website for more information.

5

Participate in neighborhood watch.

Citizens can help police maintain public safety through neighborhood watch groups. Neighborhood watch members receive training on how to organize particular areas and methods for communicating with the police and with their neighbors.

6

Participate in police initiatives, projects, and programs.

Law enforcement agencies often engage their communities by hosting events throughout the year. Examples include neighborhood barbeques, National Night Out, and Coffee with a Cop. Community members can assist the police in their efforts by participating, donating to, or helping facilitate these events.

7

Attend community meetings.

Community meetings are another way community stakeholders, business owners, church groups can engage with local government and law enforcement. Residents can communicate with police representatives at these meetings to help solve community issues and facilitate a positive, collaborative relationship.

8

Get your kids involved.

Programs that engage youth with law enforcement are a great way to get kids and their families familiar with local enforcement officers. Programs such as police explorers/cadets, Police Athletic Leagues, citizen police academies specifically for youth, and mentorship programs area all good examples of how youth can collaborate with law enforcement in a positive method.

SPOA in action

When life gets to its breaking point, we’re there first. At times our work is challenging and life threatening. But other times, we are able to save lives, make a positive difference, and connect with the people. Here are a few ways we love to give back…Sacramento PD Helps Girls Ruby Team Achieve Championship Goal

The Sacramento Police Activities League, better known as SacPAL, is a nonprofit organization whose primary goal is to build partnerships between youth and law enforcement in underserved communities. This partnership builds trust and fosters relationships between the police and the communities in which they serve. Officers volunteer their time to coach kids participating in a variety of sports while simultaneously striving to achieve their goal of building community trust. However, an unexpected and amazing thing resulted, a high school National Championship girls’ rugby team, The Amazons.

The Amazons’ success on the rugby field has not gone unnoticed. Numerous Amazon players have been actively recruited by elite Ivy League schools such as Harvard and service academies such as West Point. Several girls were voted High School All-Americans (GHSAA) by USA Rugby and many have already committed to play rugby at the collegiate level.Officer Lewis mentors Grant Pacers Pop Warner football team

Since the start of the 2017 Football season, Officer Chad Lewis took the initiative to attend conditioning practice for the Grant Pacers Pop Warner football program. He has helped with basic coaching duties and assisted the coaching staff with various drills. The coaches and parents alike were immensely exultant and appreciative that a Sacramento Police Department officer was willing to take on the task of mentoring their children.

Throughout the conditioning season, Officer Lewis continued to make frequent visits during practices and has included his partner, Officer Thrall, on several occasions. As a result of Officer Lewis’ continued involvement, he has grown and fostered positive relationships with the team and the greater Del Paso Heights community. Officer Lewis has further represented his team spirit and support by purchasing Grant Pacers Pop Warner apparel that he wears during practices and games. During the team’s first full gear practice game last month, Officer Lewis attended while off-duty so that he could provide further encouragement for the players. They have forged strong positive relationships between SPD and the team, coaches and involved families.
