California Peace Officers' Memorial Foundation

The beautiful bronze and granite California Peace Officers’ Memorial located on
State Capitol grounds in Sacramento contains the names of the more than 1,400
courageous peace officers who have laid down their lives in the line of duty protecting
and serving their fellow Californians, dating back to early statehood.

February 2007

Now that we are well into 2007, lets see where we are headed.

The building at 550 Bercut is getting closer to reality every day. We have even upped the closing date to February 16th. I suspect by the time you read this message, we will be property owners. Once escrow closes, we will begin a remodel of the building and move in as soon as it is done. We are excited to get out of our rental space and into our own permanent home. Brent Meyer has done a great job in identifying the key parts of the building to include not only offices, but a meeting hall large enough for our Christmas Party, Installation and general membership meetings, including contract ratification meetings. There are also plans to have a “down room” for officers to use for C-7, breaks from court, etc. I am excited about this and hopefully you are as well.

January 2007

Happy New Year. Now that we’re done with the holiday festivities and everyone is back to work, it’s time to get motivated for what 2007 has to bring. The last two years have been very significant for the SPOA. In 2005 we entered into a solid 5 year contract with the city and 2006 brought us in the midst of a significant statewide election. 2007 won’t have those types of events, but we will be gearing up for a 2008 local election that we most likely will be highly involved in regarding the funding and size of our department.

December 2006

As we enter into the holiday season and ponder the completion of 2006, we have several accomplishments that I would like to recognize. I had the privilege of seeing several of you as you came in for patrol sign ups. Thinking back to the days when I was on the last day to sign up and I had my choice of graveyard or graveyard, middle of the week off in comparison with today when a brand new officer has the shot at dayshift at his or her first sign up baffles me! The statistic that the majority of our patrol staff has less than 5 years on is pretty amazing as well. This is an illustration that the Sacramento Police Department is going through a re-vitalization of youth and the new ideas and vitality that comes with it.

November 2006

I can’t believe that the year is almost over. In October, I celebrated my first year anniversary as your president, and last month we swore in new and returning board members. The holidays are upon us and we are gearing up for a new patrol plan for 2007. I suspect we will see some more positive changes in 2007 that will make your quality of life improve.
